CUBAGNAC, ARDECHE

LAURENT FELL, MAS DE L’ESCARIDA

Laurent Fell has some of the highest vines in the Ardeche, on south facing slopes at 500m altitude on the edge of the wild and mountainous Cevennes forest. The soil is sandstone formed in the Triassic period coming from the degradation of granite that was recompressed by pressure when the sea settled in this time. There are large quartz pebbles, shale and flint from the glacial scree. This combined with the elevation of the vineyards brings freshness and minerality to the wines. He’s on his own up there, which is beneficial as there is no risk of pollutants from other vineyards and plenty of biodiversity. A beautiful antique press which is situated above the tanks so all the juice flows by gravity.. Bottled with zero additions, these are wines of immense drinkability, stability & value.

LE MAI POLIDA 2022 £13

We were delighted to get an unexpected re-stock of this delicious wine. 100% Viognier, pressed direct, gravity fed into tank for 24 hours for the gross lees to settle, then aged on the fine lees for around 11 months before bottling. It's peachy and fresh with a little spritz, Laurent always manages to balance the big fruit with freshness and acidity, making this wine just so easy to get on with.

LE MAI POLIDA 2023 £14.50

The 2023 Viognier is a fresher brighter style than 2022, packing in a punch of peachy fruit and pouring a hazy white. A lot of fun.

LE MAI POLIDA 2024 £14.50

The 2024 version of this wine is bright and fresh with peachy fruit and a light fresh minerality. Clean as a whistle!

FAI VIRAR 'ROSE' 2023 £13

Delicious 'rose' produced from Gamay. Laurent makes this from just the free run juice (the juice that comes as the grapes macerate, rather than from actually pressing the grapes). It gives extraordinary delicacy to the wine. Aromatic and incredibly refreshing, it is more light red and than pink wine, but all the better for it! The 2023 is light and fresh with a beautiful line of acidity, a classic and a standout vintage.

FAI VIRAR ROUGE 2023 £13

100% Gamay, the press juice. This is always a favourite and the 2023 is a brilliant vintage. Soft red fruit, silky tannins and a lot of freshness, a bottle that we reach for, again and again.

SOPLE E JOIOS 2023 £13

100% Gamay from his oldest vines. A similar vinification to the Virar Rouge, but the wine tends to have more depth and concentration. 2023 is a lovely vintage, with nice concentration, silky tannins, but very balanced and drinkable.

SOTA MON SOLEU 2023 £13

100% Merlot from 50 year old vines. This wine is a burst of sunshine in the cold months, full of silky dark black fruit, with very sultry tannins. 2023 is a great vintage with beautiful balance, ripe fruit and opens up beautifully over a couple of days.

ESCARIDA ROUGE 20L KEYKEG 2024 £235 (£8.80 75cl)

Syrah & Chatus, a native varietal that is particularly rare and only found in mountainous vineyards around here and in the Savoie. Laurent destems the fruit and gives it around 7 days maceration before ageing in tank. The 2023 is softer than 2022, already drinking beautifully with soft dark fruit.

DOMAINE OZIL

Thomas and Jean-Daniel Ozil look after this family estate, which did just sell grapes, but now make their own delicious wines whilst continuing to sell quite a bit of fruit to small natural winemakers in the region and beyond. Working on 17 hectares, farming organically on typical Ardeche terroir of clay and limestone, they are able to select the best fruit for themselves and make wines that are delicious but also brilliant value. We have followed their project for a long time and are delighted to work together again.

Valvignères, Ardeche

MAUD ADNOT

We first met Maud at an annual Ardèche natural wine fair in 2022, where her wines stood out amongst a lot of good wines. She was then working with other growers in the region, in a tiny cave in Valvignères. Since then, she has moved to a larger space and taken on some of her own vines, whilst still purchasing fruit for some of her wines. Her unique touch remains, the wines are delicate, direct, vibrant and wonderfully fresh. All are produced without additions.

POMELOS 2024 £15

The remaining Merlot, with some colour, goes into this delicious rose, aged in fibreglass, it's bright elegant and pours a beautiful pale pink. Grapefruit!

UNDER PRESSURE 21/22 2024 £17

25% Syrah from vines on the rolled pebbles and silt from the banks of the Rhône River in Saint Marcel d’Ardèche. From 2021 and aged for 18 months in barrel. She blended this with some free run Grenache on Clay-limestone and marl in Valvignères. The balance is perfect - the dark sultry Syrah fruit, balanced with bright berry Grenache.

Désaignes, Ardeche

MATHIAS BARRALON

We stumbled upon Mathias' wines at a fair in the Ardeche a few years ago, he was sharing a his barrel table with Daniel Sage and showing just one wine, an impossibly delicious, elegant Pinot Noir. He had no wine to sell. Fortunately we ran into him again a couple of times at some wine fairs and as he built up his tiny estate, we have finally managed to procure some wines from him, which are as delicious as that first memory.

The estate is made up of 2.5 hectares of hillside vines located on the south-facing slope of the commune of Désaignes, in northern Ardèche, 30km from Tournon-sur-Rhône. The entire estate was planted, from 2018, on land which was under vines until the 1950s and which had been abandoned following the rural exodus to the city. The terroir is granitic and the vines are planted between 500 and 600m above sea level, which brings freshness to the wines. The grape varieties planted are: Pinot Noir, Gamay, Chenin and Syrah. The vines are pruned in gobelets for the Pinot Noir and Syrah, in cordon de royat for the Chenin and the Gamay. The vines are farmed organically, limiting as much as possible the use of copper in cultivation, through preventive operations and the use of fermented plant extracts (Nettle, Horsetail, etc.). The yields obtained are low (less than 40hL/ha) to preserve the quality of the grapes. The ground works are carried out with a crawler, all the other operations are carried out by hand. The harvest is manual. In the cellar, vinification is carried out using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. The musts are pressed in a ratchet press then aged in stainless steel vats.

His estate wines show the potential of this tiny part of the Ardeche to make intense, delicious wines that balance depth, complexity with a light balanced touch.

In 2024 Mathias bought some fruit to make some wines to supplement his income, offering a taste of his style They show his skill as a winemaker and offer his elegant touch at a more affordable price point.
