We are thrilled to start working with Fabien Perréard, who makes wines under the moniker Le Nadir in the heart of Saumur, Maine-et-Loire.
We were introduced to Fabien through Côme Isambert, who is hosting Fabien in his cellar underneath a Chateau in the middle of Saumur while he searches for his own space.
Formerly travelling the world and creating images as a graphic designer, Fabien was inspired to become a winemaker by the vibrant artisanal winemaking scene of Anjou. In 2018 and 2019 he studied and worked in the wineyards of Saumur: first with Jean-Pierre Chevallier - Chateau de Villeneuve (Souzay), and then with Matthieu Vallée - Chateau Yvonne (Parnay) as well as Aymeric Hillaire - Domaine Mélaric (Puy Notre Dame).
In 2020 he bought 1 ha of chenin from Gil Caborderie - Domaine des Cabors in Forges, in the south-Saumurois, where the vines had been cultivated in organic farming since 2012, and then took 1 ha more of chenin/grolleau noir/cabernet franc from a vine-grower of Brossay in the same area which he started converting to organic growing immediately.
He work his 2 hectares alone; a few friends would help for the tillage in spring and for the harvest in autumn. Fabien only uses a tractor for the tillage; the rest of the work is by hand. Treatments are very rarely used. In the cellar he utilises an old wooden vertical basket press and generally ages in barrel. Usually the wine is racked only 2 times : one at the end of the fermentation and one in the end of maturation (made in barrels, fiber tanks and inox tanks). Always without additions. The wines are pristine, with lovely texture, length and a lovely line of acidity, they are also incredibly stable, considering they are bottled with no additions. A remarkable first vintage.
