Simon Rouillard, Anjou

After studying music Simon worked for 2 years with organic market gardeners which he found really fascinating and was the bridge to land in the vineyard.

A long few years of working in vineyards followed, starting in 2013 at La grange aux belle, in Anjou, Nicolas Grosbois in 2014 (Chinon). Then - the Jura, almost 2 years at Domaine de la Tournelle, which casted a lasting influence on his work. Following this he spent time with Jura producers Philippe Bornard, Raphael and Marie (Ratapoil), Jean-Ba and Florine (Les Boots Rouges) & Catherine Hannoun (Domaine de la Loue). Then down to the Gard with Frederic Agneray, who now sells Simon grapes for his negociant wines.

When it was time to start his own project he returned to Anjou, spending time working with  Babass and Agnès (Les Vignes de Babass), as he got set up. He now has two hectares of beautiful old vines which he is restoring, as well as planting his own young vines of Grolleau & Chenin.

We  first tried Simon'’s wines back in 2019 at Christophe Foucher of La Lunotte's cellar in Couffy, a beguiling bottle of Musette 2018 that a friend of his had brought to dinner. We were entranced by the purity and lightness of touch for a first vintage, though once learning of his experiences in wine it made a lot more sense.
